Problem Launching Gwibber (related to a webkit error)

Asked by Chuck Frain

I've installed gwibber on my Ubuntu Hardy system (fully patched) following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/gwibber but when I try to run it from the command line using the './run' command or 'gwibber' after installing it, I get the following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/gwibber", line 11, in <module>
    from gwibber.client import GwibberClient
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/gwibber/client.py", line 11, in <module>
    import gtk, gtk.glade, gobject, table, webkit
ImportError: No module named webkit

I will provide further info upon request, I just don't know what else might be relevant.

Perhaps you don't have the correct package installed. Why not try installing python-webkitgtk and see if that works?

Hi. I had the same problem. kabads' solution worked for me, but I had to add the new "Intrepid" repositories first. I used the simple instructions here:

http://aldeby.org/blog/index.php/mixing-hardy-stable-and-intrepid-testing-repositories.html

I don't think Gwibber would require the use of the "restricted" repository, but I'm really a n00b who shouldn't opine on such matters. I added it anyway.

OK. There is no need to mess with "Intrepid". I thought that would have been necessary because the ubuntu package page does not mention a "Hardy" version of the package:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/fi/intrepid/python-webkitgtk

There is a "Hardy" compatible version of the package here:

https://code.launchpad.net/~jorge/+archive

I actually had quite a bit of trouble with the "Intrepid" repository. I wouldn't recommend unless--unlike me--you know what you're doing.

Can you help with this problem?
