What happens to tasks once they're marked as done or dismissed?

What happens to a task once you mark it as done, or dismiss it? Are they deleted?
What's the difference between dismissing a task and marking it as done?

I just found the answer to my own question: to view dimissed tasks or tasks that are marked as done, you just have to click View, Closed tasks pane. Tasks that have been marked as done are listed first, followed by dismissed tasks, in a lighter colour.
