depends, if you want use your video camera like a web cam and it's capable, just plug it, before install camstreams with apt-get to see it. most of the video cameras, had support on ubuntu.

don't forget to look for the video4linux and webcam packages on synaptic.

can you tell what exactly do you want to do with your camera?

regards

Thank you for responding. However I dont understand the procedure from
your description. Are you describing an app: camstreams? Please be more
explicit. What Im going to do with cam? Use it during chats to view the
other person and vice versa. If possible, show scenes of my
home/neighborhood.

well using your camera as a a webcam it's quite easy.

1. camstreams is a webcam viewer, i like it cause it's fully compatible
with my cam.

to install it just do a:

$ sudo apt-get install camstream

or search it on synaptic System -> Administer -> Synaptic

there is a lot of webcam viewers on the Ubuntu repos(if you have enable the
universe and multiverse repos), just search for webcam on synaptic.

2. To use your camera to chat on Ubuntu there is Ekiga ($sudo apt-get
install ekiga), a very nice video conference app, you must have an account
and also your friends.

there are other apps, but i never probe them, like gaim-vv to do
videoconferences with Yahoo and Jabber users. and amsn with MSN users

3. To do a home Surveillance Camera, you can use the motion command from
console, motion Detect movement with your camera.

$sudo apt-get install motion

after just do "$man motion" on the console to get more info about how to use
it.

4. If you want to create a webcam server ... it's quite long to explain now,
there is lot of manuals on google

5. This had to be first to say to you ! if camestreams don't recognize your
camera, you may have to look for an specific drivers for your camera. Tell
me, if so.

Thanks again, Mario. It has taken me a little search to find out how to indicate that the problem is solved.
