Why does my grub automatically go into "Rescue mode"?

Asked by Hans L

When I boot, on of the first things I see after post is:

Loading GRUB
Welcome to GRUB!
Entering Rescue mode...

At this point my hard drive thrashes for 10-15 seconds, and eventually a normal looking grub menu displays, where I can boot into Ubuntu without any problem.

Can someone tell me why grub is doing this?

Could you post a copy of your menu.lst from /boot/grub/

Ah... then it is grub.cfg then - please post the contents of that.

Never mind... that appears to be wrong too. I will have to boot up my Karmic VM to see what may be the cause.

You may want to take a look at /etc/default/grub

If the entries look good try running the following command:

update-grub

see if that helps.

Can you help with this problem?
