Grub Customizer loads a configuration different from what shows in Grub

Asked by Cristiano Anguillesi

Hello,

I have a dual boot PC running Linux Mint and Windows 10. (I mostly use Linux)

I recently upgraded Linux Mint to 19.3. After the upgrade, the graphic settings of Grub (screen resolution, background picture etc.) were changed for some reason. The menu options (Linux Mint 19.3, Advanced options, Windows Boot Manager, System setup) were only updated to the new release of Linux Mint, otherwise unchanged. Everything apparently works as expected.

I wanted to change back the graphic settings, so I launched Grub Customizer. However, GC shows a different configuration from the one shown in Grub - the first entry is "Ubuntu" instead of "Linux Mint..."; also the graphic settings are different from what I see in Grub. Since discretion is the best part of valor, I quit GC without saving changes.

Right now it is not an issue - Grub works fine, and I can leave it this way. Still it would be nice to fix this.

Thank you for your help!

Usually this happens when the grub instance you're loading into grub customizer is different from that one that is showed when booting up (this problem can be fixed by running the "install to mbr" functionality). However if there's only one linux distro, then that's unlikely the reason.

When you quit grub customizer, is it telling you about an updated configuration (popup) after using the close button?

Yes (sorry it is in Italian):

I was unsure so I chose "exit without updating"

Oops I tried to upload a screen capture but it did not work

Popup dialog box says (more or less) "Configuration generated did not match the one saved at boot. What you see now could be different from what you will see when you reboot the PC. To solve the problem clic on Update!"

Should I chose "update and exit"? (I am a bit afraid...)
