Grub Customizer

Can only boot with particular recovery mode

I can only boot Ubuntu 18 using Ubuntu with the Linux 4.4.0 - 134 generic (recovery mode) option from the grub menu. I can not even boot from the installation CD. The other grub options result in the screen freezing or the keyboard freezing or I am unable to enter a password or it is not recognised. This is probably the result of a "bad installation" but can anyone tell me what is special about the Ubuntu With Linux 4.4.0 - 134 Generic (recovery mode) option and how I might boot normally in future.
