Custom font = UGLY menu

Asked by Ernie Pantuso

Changing the font using Grub Customizer yield a very ugly menu - each line of text has a blank space in between each pair of letters PLUS the menu is surrounded by a frame composed of glyph characters. I've tried numerous fonts - even gone back to "Normal" setting - nothing seems to fix this. Please help me fix this! It's still functional but it looks like crap. (I'm running Mint 17.2/Rafaela.)

Feel free to close this. An answer (THANK YOU, Chris Peach!) to another question suggested that using the FreeMono font would work - and it did. MUCH better!
