Can I install boot code on partition pbr instead of MBR

Asked by Joan on 2014-03-29

I don't want to overwrite the MBR of the HDD, so I need to install GRUB boot code on the / partition boot sector (pbr) and use chain loading from another OS to boot into that partition. My Linux root is on /dev/sda5.

By clicking "File > Install to MBR" , the boot code is written to the MBR of /dev/sda, which I don't want to do. Can I change /dev/sda to /dev/sda5 to install the boot code on the pbr of the / partition?

I can manually install grub on the / partition using the "grub-install" command with the --force option, but I would rather use Grub Customizer to do the whole operation.

Grub customizer just runs grub-install, so it's no problem doing the same on command line.

Installing to PBR currently isn't possible using grub customizer because the force parameter isn't attached.

Can you help with this problem?
