Can GroundControl be used in Ubuntu 12.04? also question on README

Asked by Patrick Dickey

Hello there,

First and foremost, if I build Ground Control from the latest daily builds (using bzr branch lp:groundcontrol), will it run on Ubuntu 12.04? If not, then my second question is moot.

Secondly, in the README file, you say:

Make a symbolic link from ./nautilus-groundcontrol.py to ~/.nautilus/python-extensions

cd ~/.nautilus/python-extensions
ln -s /My/Projects/Dir/nautilus-groundcontrol.py .

You also need a symbolic link to the GroundControl modules:

ln -s /My/Projects/Dir/GroundControl .

My questions about this are: 1) Where do I create the symbolic link to the GroundControl modules (as in under ~/.nautilus/python-extensions or another directory) and 2) shouldn't the pathname be /path/to/groundcontrol/main/files/lib/GroundControl as you have the GroundControl directory under the lib directory? (So in my case it would be ln -s /home/username/Projects/ground-control/lib/GroundControl . )

I tried installing the build from the main ppa on Ubuntu 12.04, but it won't go past the login/register dialog box. It will let me login, but it returns me back to that same box and never gets my user information. That's why i'm wanting to try the latest builds.

Thanks, and have a great weekend. :)
Patrick.

Hey Patrick,

The version 2.0 under development in the bzr branch will work on 12.04, that's what it's being developed on.

But the functionality is not complete, so you can log onto launchpad, and you can list bugs, projects, users and even use them via the dashboard and the indicator.

But the screens for looking after branches have yet to be converted to the new formats for Gnome3. Further development is dependant on sponsorship. Forward users like yourself can help by helping me push the code forwards in the ways most important to users. No coding needed, just prodding about the things you need.

At the moment, development is stalled because we have no users.

Thank you for the reply Martin. As for not having users, I think part
of the problem is that no one knows about the v2.0 branch. Unless it's
the stuff you were working on in February, that is.

Also, as long as the basic functionality is there (logging in, fetching
projects, commit, push, pull), I'm pretty sure I might be able to drum
up some users. I'm a member of the ubuntu manual project, and in the
past, we were going to recommend your project for people who weren't
familiar with bazaar and the command line.

IIRC, you're in the Planet Ubuntu list, right? Have you put a call out
on the feed for that?

Also, as for my second question, where do I create the symlink that
points to the lib/GroundControl directory? (I'm guessing it would be in
the source directory above). This is assuming that what I fetched from
bazaar is the 2.0 branch, of course. If not, then I'll have to fetch
that branch.

Have a great weekend.:)
Patrick.

I agree, there is a chasm between getting GroundControl 2.0 ready for users, and having enough user interest to push it forwards.

There is no symlink to make. There's no nautilus-python extension in version 2.0, the Gnome3 nautilus has a broken python extensions library which made it hard to develop. Hopefully they've fixed the issue since I last checked.

The readme should be updated.

Run groundcontrol-daemon from the branch, this should create an indicator. You can then run the other scripts to do various things. That's the extent of the functionality until I get drivers.

If Adolfo and Patrick can meet me on #groundcontrol on Freenode (IRC) then we can have a short meeting and get a party started. I'll be waiting.

Hi there,

I'm trying to connect but for some reason Quassel is taking it's own
sweet time. If I'm not able to meet with you this weekend, how about
next weekend around this time on either Saturday or Sunday? I typically
work nights, so I'm usually just waking up around this time every day.

So, around 20:00 on either Saturday or Sunday (UTC) which is about 3:00
CDT (where I live).

Have a great week.:)
Patrick.

Patrick recommended your program so I want to test it, too.
