what version of ubuntu are you trying to use?
where does it 'freeze' and how does it, do you just get a blank black screen, or do you get some sort of error message? or do you get the same screen that you had before (please say what screen it is) but nothing happening?
can you press ctrl+alt+F1 to get to a terminal?
is fastwrite enabled in your bios?
and lastly can you please post your xorg.conf?

it sounds like a problem with desktop effects, if you can get to a terminal (ctrl+alt+F1) goto there and type:
sudo apt-get remove compiz beryl

you should also make sure that fast write is not enabled in your bios.

just so you know with a radeon 9250 you don't have to 'install your graphics card', ubuntu comes with free software drivers for it that are installed automatically and ati/amd do not support it with their binary drivers anymore.

Can you help with this problem?
