Groups vs. Main List

Asked by Chef Jeffrey

Let’s say that i have 15 recipes that i have already added to my collection the normal way. Is there any way that I can put them into a group, a sub directory, if you will without having them moved from my main list?

Gourmet does not really support hierarchical organization of recipes. You could however emulate such an hierarchical structure by using the "Browse Recipes" plugin, which at its top level will offer you the different criteria by which you can group recipes (such as category, cuisine, prep time, cooking time), and at the second level will group recipes by equal values of the selected criterion.

Depending on your needs, you can use a field like category to tag a recipe e.g. as main course, and then, using the Browse Recipes plugin, you can query all recipes in that category.

Also note that with the category field in particular, you can enter multiple values separated by commas. So you could set a recipe's field as "main course, vegetarian", which will create both a "main course" and a "vegetarian" category in the Browse Recipes plugin, both containing that recipe. (Strictly speaking, this breaks a purely hierarchical order, but it might be useful regardless ;-)

Hope that helps
Bernhard
