Installed - Now What?

Asked by mdgill

I installed GnoMenu on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex from the tar file unpacked to my Desktop via 'sudo make install'. Everything seemed to install fine, and I can locate the files in their proper places. I rebooted.

There doesn't seem to be anything to launch the program or select it. How do I get it to run?

I was running some Murrine themes, but now I am just running Dust. Obvious newbie. Any help?

GnoMenu is a panel applet. In order to properly use it it has to be added to the panel. Right click on the panel and select "Add to panel" where you select "GnoMenu" and then you should see your selected (or the default) panel button. Click on that to use it.

Sometimes, however, GnoMenu needs a kick start (so to speak) before it will work in the panel and if that is the case then use this command in a terminal, "GnoMenu.py run-in-window" which will bring up the GnoMenu Icon running in a separate window. In the terminal use <ctrl> + <c> to kill it and then it should work fine in the panel.

technoshaun suggests this article as an answer to your question:

Thanks technoshaun, that solved my question.

No kick start was necessary. Thanks. I knew this would be an absurdly simple problem. I also knew I had unexplored items available via right-click on the panel bars; I should've guessed the solution. Not everyone is willing to answer the simple questions, so thanks again.
