Cannot install gnomenu

Asked by Bernhard

I would really recommend you to write a HOW-TO on installing gnomenu. I tried to do it unsuccessfully and had to guess the steps myself. I think it's currently not possible to install gnomenu with the debs from https://launchpad.net/gnomenu/trunk/1.6:

Numbering the sample debs 1-3 I get the following problems,

- if I install 1 first, I get "dependency is not satisfiable: gnomenuthemes|gnomenuthemes"
- if I install 2 first, I get "dependency is not satisfiable: gnomenuthemes"
- I can install 3 first, but then what? I tried 3-2-1 and 3-1-2 but in either case I cannot get gnomenu to run:

$ GnoMenu.py
None
$

is the best I get but it doesn't do anything to the menu.

technoshaun suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #279: “How to install GnoMenu using the DEB packages”.

This faq is (logically) confusing: do I have to do the dpgk -i-R stuff all the time or only if do not install with debs?

I basically did steps 1. and 2. from your faq and it installed but didn't change the menu even after running gnomenu.py.

The dpkg -i -R * command is only if you want install all packages at once from a clean directory that you have put them in.

You state you followed stepes one and two and have installed GnoMenu. When you add GnoMenu to the Gnome Panel, what happens?

This:

$ GnoMenu.py
None
$

and the menu never changes. This is actually in my original report (last item in the list: it does install but does not change the menu even after running Gnomenu.py).

Are you using the cor4rect command, GnoMenu.py run-in-window?

What means run-in-window.

I'm typing GnoMenu.py into the shell and then I get

$ GnoMenu.py
None

That's all, shell says "None" and prompts again without doing anything.

Aha, now I tried:

> GnoMenu.py run-in-window
None
Reorientating Orb top!! (Don't let this happen too often!!)
start
Applications
show

but I still get this error message and what happens is that it does not replace the classical gnome menu but places an icon below the other menu icon. I thought it would replace the old menu?

Also, maybe you should write a HOW-TO: how am I supposed to know that I should use the command gnomenu.py run-in-window? It's not clear from the wiki on launchpad.

You can add GnoMenu to the panel by right clicking the panel and selecting "Add to Panel" where you will find GnoMenu in the list of things you can add to the panel.
