Black Boxes On panel

After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, the notfication icons and the log out/on/off icons are sometimes replaced with black boxes. I have deleted the theme ones and added others from the 'add to panel' menu. These new ones are persistant but do not match the theme (radiance). Obviously I would like to have the theme icons working properly.
