As the default engine is VLC, LibVLC is required, unless you want to hack the configure file to remove the dependency (Will result in runtime errors)

Yes, libvlc-dev is required, if you want to compile the source yourself. But, who said the default engine is VLC? The default engine is xine. Well, now, in the latest release, there are different launchers in the menu for each engine.

not solved. upgraded vlc from webupd8 ppa, gmp comes off. I think the dependency needs to be fixed.

Hi blazemore, I'm not sure that I understand the issue. libvlc is required to run GMP, but this alone is not enough to use the VLC engine. As I'm sure that you know, you need VLC installed to use the VLC engine. Unfortunately, VLC comes with a whole swag of dependencies that a die-hard GNOME user wouldn't appreciate, that's why it's optional.

I think that webupd8 is pushing VLC 1.1.0 but this version has not been released by the videolan guys and is not supported yet. When it is released we should have a compatible GMP version ready to go.
