Acer 751h on Ubuntu 9.10 still does not work

Asked by Call me Ishmael

Hello, I followed the procedure on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo#Karmic%20%289.10%29

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config

for Karmic (9.10), but still does not work after reboot. The resolution is 1024x768, no 2d or 3d acceleration at all.
I have the latest kernel (2.6.31-22) installed as requested. The psb module is not preloaded, a modprobe psb inserts the module without problems or warnings, but of course is too late to add it after session start.
I added the psb module to /etc/modules, still it does not work and I don't think it is the correct procedure, anyway.
I compiled the psb.ko module (apt-get install psb-kernel-modules) and apt-get remove psb-modules as specified in the above how to, still no luck.
I downgraded the kernel to -20 -15 and -14, recompiled the module, still it did not work for any kernel.
According to the howto, 2D and 3D shall work for Karmic (reason why I did not try Lucid), but it doesn't.
I installed 9.10 with the alternate cd (text mode), and since it was plugged to the network it did all the updates during installation. Last resort is to re-install from scratch with no updates and see what's happening if I compile psb.ko with the default (-14?) kernel.

I've seen a lot's of howtos about manual modification of xorg.conf, but I guess they are outdated and the last procedure should work.
Any suggestion, hint?
Thanks,

Andrea

I have the same problems with my Dell mini (Karmic) and am currently using the "2.6.31-21" kernel, which works great, as the new kernel leads to the low resolution notification at boot.

I've tried the new method, but it doesn't work. When I try to solve whatever the issue may be, following the new manual, I get the following:

xxxx@xoxo: sudo dpkg-reconfigure psb-kernel-source
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: psb-kernel-source is not installed

Any help will be appreciated. Thx

Thanks for your input, call me Ishmael,

I had tried it several times before and tried it once again, but it still takes me, at boot, to the low-graphical mode notification page with lots of errors.

Back to the 2.6.31-21 again : (

Hi, Vitality Kulikov,

I reinstalled the packages as you suggested. No luck : (
Same old low-graphic mode.

I guess I'll be sticking with 2.6.31-21 for a while until whatever the issues are resolved. It works flawlessly with my Dell mini 10 anyway.

Thanks for your help, bud.

You are welcome. I see Your vision.

In any case, You can convert this conversion to bug 'Create bug report' to provide more info about your system by apport-collect.

$ apport-collect <BUG_NUMBER> -p xserver-xorg-video-psb

Bad, news that for now NO support for karmic, but we can support You with configuration issues.
I think You have some old linked libraries.

Well, also You can migrate to Lucid. But, remember remove old drivers before it.
