Do we really need to imitate other operating systems look?
An open letter to the Gloobus community/devs.,
Do we really need to imitate other operating systems look? From the way I see it, I think it's inappropriate to mimic that other operating system's UI. We should make Gloobus preview our own for Gnome.
A great example of this process is Gnome Do's 'Docky'. Yes, it's the same *functionality* as that other OS' dock, but it's aesthetically different, aesthetically our own, and perhaps, aesthetically more appropriate for the Gnome desktop.
I can definately see why someone would like the "Theme" the way it is now. It looks close to that other OS' interface, and great if you want to imitate that OS, but what of the people who don't?
I'm totally on board for grabbing bits and pieces of other OS' functionality, and making a better desktop. I love projects like Global Menu, Do's Docky, and Gloobus. I feel projects like this push the Gnome Desktop into the correct heuristic direction. For Gloobus' sake, I think at this point a clear independent visual direction is needed for it to reach it's potential.
I love Gloobus, and I want it to see it move forward, moving forward as it's own entity, independent of it's imitation.
Thank you for your time,
Cameron Leslie
