GEM runs but does not appear on screen

Asked by Paul Emony

Ubuntu 14.04

Have used Cryptkeeper on laptop for several years but always with launch problems, when booting usually got error message "Cryptkeeper closed unexpectedly" and had to enter 'cryptkeeper' in terminal several times to open it, so gave GEM a try. This worked first time I used it but now it seems to open without actually appearing on screen, the first time I try I get 'Using AppIndicator' in terminal but nothing else happens, if I try again by manually entering '~ $ gnome-encfs-manager' I get 'Another instance is already running.' To make matters worse Cryptkeeper itself does something similar, the key icon no longer appears in the tray no matter what I do so encrypted files are inaccessible. Help please!

P.S. If I log in as "Guest" then both Cryptkeeper and GEM work

Same problem, different user, years later. I assume there's a file lock that didn't cleanly exit?
How do I fix this?

Oh, this report seems to have gone unnoticed by me.

GEncfsM starts hidden to the system tray by default and then the manager window can only be accessed from there. You can change that option from the command line by entering

gnome-encfs-manager set_pref start_minimized=false

The manager window will then show up when the application is restarted (e.g. by gnome-encfs-manager --replace)

You might want to switch to the Molch Encfs Manger (https://moritzmolch.com/apps/mencfsm/index.html) since it's more gentle when no tray is available and shows the interface when executed a second time.

Hope this helps, Moritz
