PDF Paper Size

Asked by jdparent

Would it be possible to add an option for the Paper Size used when creating the PDF? Standard 8.5 x 11 works great for viewing on a computer or printing, but I'm looking to be able to push the pdf to an eReader which would, preferably, like a different paper size.

It's something I'd like to do if I get a little more time. If you know of standard sizes for ereaders, please let me know.

Keyvan-

Right now your PDFs come out in A4 or letter size. As the OP said, way too big for ereaders.

Just create an option to print in A5 size (148 × 210 cm) and most ereaders will be able to more or less handle it. Just do it like the others, as an option users can pass to the URL like:

&SIZE=A5

This would be really handy for me and at least some others. If I could use this service on my old eink reader, it would be worth subscribing.

By the way, very impressive work on your RSS full text reader; the ability to combine it with your PDF maker is really useful.

Jack: Good to know about the A5 size. I'm happy to try and make this change over the next few weeks but the main problem is that I don't have one of these ereaders. If you're happy to volunteer to test the results for me, please let me know and I'll be in touch.

And I'm glad you like the Full-Text RSS and PDF combo. :)

I've got an Iliad eink newsreader with an 8 inch screen; I'll be happy to test for you on that. Irex (the manufacturer) promised newspaper delivery on them when they came out a few years ago, but it never materialized. Whenever you get around to making this update, please post to this thread and I'll give it a run for you, and describe the results.

Thanks for your work.

Jack, if you're still happy to test this out, I've uploaded changes with an A5 option: http://fivefilters.org/pdf-newspaper/ (might need to do a hard refresh for it to show up). It simply adds a &template=A5 to the resulting URL.

Well, I can report that Keyvan's addition of an A5 option is perfect, for my E-reader at any rate. It has made this system completely useable on an Iliad e-reader, with a screen just under 8 inches diagonal; it produces a nicely formatted full text newspaper from the numerous foreign-language papers I read, and one which easily fits on the screen. I'm definitely going to subscribe. Thanks a bunch Keyvan!

Jack: Thanks a lot for testing this out. Great to hear that it's usable now on the Iliad. (I noticed story titles occasionally split over two pages in A5 mode - will be fixing that soon.) :)
