Google News feed cleanup

Asked by atonaldenim

I'm really happy to have discovered this great program and doubly happy I can easily run it on my own server.

It seems to be quite good at cleaning up the messy feeds generated by Google News searches. We do media work with progressive advocacy groups that involves tracking the work of specific journalists, and Google News is a handy way of keeping tabs on bloggers and journalists that are published in multiple news outlets.

I'm wondering if you've considered adding some specific intelligence to the script for handling Google News feeds, a specific example could be changing the URL for each post from Google's redirect URL to the original URL of the story. We've had problems in recent months with Google's redirected URLs breaking for no apparent reason. Other Google News cleanup options might include rewriting the title of the feed (the default title is the search terms used to generate the feed), or rewriting the titles of posts (from [title] - [source] to just [title], for example).

Thanks for releasing such a useful program!

Thanks for the comment and suggestion. I'm glad you're able to run this on your own server - we really want to make it easy for people to use these tools without having to rely on even more centralized services outside their control. :)

Regarding your suggestion, I am hoping to allow for plugins/extensions which will allow people to do things like that. Have you got an example of a Google news feed URL which contains these redirect URLs?

Can you help with this problem?
