NHTSA recalls site returns Invalid URL supplied

Asked by Jennifer Dixon

The NHTSA recalls site returns the error "Invalid URL Supplied" on my downloaded version (1.5) but is fine on the fivefilters.org site.

This is the link:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/rss/feeds/rss_recalls_C.xml

I have tested this in a MAMP and a LINUX environment using PHP 5.3.

Also, the FDA recalls site, works on the fivefilters.org site but returns the error "Sorry, readability was unable to parse this page for content." on my downloaded version.

The link is:
http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/ContactFDA/StayInformed/RSSFeeds/Recalls/rss.xml

The enviroments MAMP and LINUX using PHP 5.3

My thinking is that these errors may be related. If not I apologize for asking two questions in one.

Thank you

Jennifer, I can't reproduce the first error on version 1.5. It returns a feed but is unable to extract the correct content (I get '<p>The Help button requires JavaScript to be enabled. If you cannot enable JavaScript, please go to the following webpage http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/HELP/recall.html file to access the Help file.</p>' in all 4 items.)

For the second feed I get the same result as you - the reason it works on fivefilters.org is because of the newer version of Readability we're running.

I'm going to try and set up a page to let you enter a URL and compare the 1.5 and 2.0 results side by side. I'll let you know when it's up. Now that we're running 2.0 it's impossible for users to compare their own 1.5 instance against our live copy, as in your case. So hopefully this will make it a little easier.

Thank you very much. Definitely looking forward to v2.0. I made a contribution and will try to add more if it helps.
