Binding a word to a program

I just installed firefox and I can use the browser from my command line by typing /opt/firefox/firefox &, but what I can't do is make it so the icon on my application menu uses it. Is there a way to bind a command so when I type "firefox" into the terminal that it automatically starts the program, unless there are any suggestions on how to make the application run correctly on the start menu?

Hello,

how did you install firefox? If you installed it the "normal" way (Applications -> Add/Remove), it would be present in the Applications menu.

I used command line and I extracted the folder, and then placed it in the /opt folder.

If you have the latest ubuntu version (7.04 feisty) then firefox should already be installed with the latest version and you should not download it manually.

If you still want to use the firefox you downloaded (not recommended), then you can edit menus by right-clicking on the menu and clicking on "Edit menus".
You can then add an element in the menu.

In this case, you can also change the default browser used on System->Preferences->Prefered applications
