Backspace Key Not mapped to "Back" feature

Asked by Joe Baker

Firefox on Windows and Linux (Mandriva, Knoppix) has always had the backspace key as a keyboard shortcut for the Web Browser's "Back a page in history" function.

Under 6.10 + LTSP 5 (Ubuntu) + XDMCP

Of course this would not be expected to work when editing a text box inside a web page.

Alt {left arrow} provides this function. But the Left Alt button only works in this combination. {Right-Alt} - {Left-Arrow} does not work.

In the /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf file I have specified:
XKBLAYOUT=us

I'll try using en instead of us. Documentation I've seen shows "de" as the example.

I've tried changing to:
   XKBLAYOUT=en

I still have the same problem with Backspace not working.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20060601 Firefox/2.0.0.1 (Ubuntu-edgy)

Your default keyboard for the desktop needs remapping.

To activate your right-alt key:
From the top Panel choose System > Preferences > Keyboard
Choose the Layout Options tab
Select the Group Shift/Lock behavior disclosure triangle (the label will be bold)
Uncheck Right Alt Key changes group.

That key is set for international keys/symbols

As for the Backspace key itself. Firefox removed the functionality. I believe that feature was restored in a upstream release. Feisty's release of Mozilla Firefox does not support the Backspace either.

A fix for this (that works) is detailed here:

I noticed the difference from Windows to Linux where Windows did use the
Backspace key to perform the back in history function.

I think it's really convenient to use this shortcut.
Maybe we should just suggest the setting upstream instead of making an
Ubuntu patch.
