Getting started with Financisto: Cash accounts

Asked by Wayne Khan

One of the easiest ways to have Financisto help track (and inform) of your expenditure is to create an account, and then add transactions to that account. Accounts simply refer to the different forms of assets you have, one of Cash, Bank Account, Debit Card, Credit Card, Asset, Liability, Other.

Cash accounts are straightforward, they have a title (name), a currency and opening amount; e.g. "I've got 50 bucks in my wallet that I want to keep track of.", which we can represent as a Cash account entitled "Cash". If you carry cash in different currencies, you may want to name it by the currency instead; e.g. "USD". Financisto does support multiple accounts, so this is handled easily.

Once your "USD" account is created, you can add a Transaction via the green plus sign at the bottom left-hand corner of the Blotter tab; e.g. "Lunch at the workplace cost me $5.45.". This can be easily expressed by assigning an Account (USD) and Category (Dining Out). Location, Note, Project are optional, but may be useful if you want to remind yourself of this particular transaction.
