Making .ogv with subtitles doesn't work

Asked by Esn

I'm using Windows 2000, and following the instructions here and here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Converting_video#Ogg-Theora_-_Tools_for_Windows
http://en.flossmanuals.net/ogg-theora/ch026_embedding-subtitles/

Converting an avi to ogv works just fine, but if I try to add subtitles as well, it fails almost immediately with a message saying "failed to encode kate data packet". Here's what it looks like:

After that, I get a 64kb .ogv file with about a second of video.

Perhaps it would be easier to learn to use .mkv as it's better documented, but I'm trying to figure out the .ogv format because it's the only one that's currently supported by BitLet video streaming. So any help would be greatly appreciated. (by the way, I also tried out several GUI tools that are available for creating OGVs, but none of them have any options for adding subtitles)

Hi,

this sounds very much like a bug that was already fixed, but is not in the latest release yet.
Could you please try with this version:
http://firefogg.org/nightly/ffmpeg2theora.exe
and report whether it works or not ?

Thanks

Great, ffmpeg2theora 0.28 was just released yesterday, so ought to work fine too.
