3.2.2 under LU11.10 not finding proper sink

under lubuntu 11.10 exaile is not finding a sink, I specify asla but the exaile reports (in terminal mode)
jack server is not running or cannot be started
but I don't want jack.
Exaile loves to try to sink to jack despite being set for alsa, exaile just hangs
