Ratings are not stored in the files themselves, but in Exaile's database. If you have a copy of Exaile's database from a time before it crashed, you can simply restore that database and ensure the files are stored at the same file path they were at before. Otherwise, there is no way to recover the ratings.

Any clue as to Exaile's database name and where its might stored ?
Have spent considerable time looking without any success.

Assuming you are using exaile 0.3.x on a standard setup, the database will be at ~/.local/share/exaile/music.db

That would work if I had used the same home directory in my new install - as it stands I can have the music without the rating or the rating without the music. I guess the real solution would be to resurrect the partition that crashed installing updates.
Aren Olson - Thanks for the help
