Scrollbar vs Progressbar for current track position

Asked by dayf

Progressbars somehow imply a kind of impatient mood as in "when is it finally done?!" -- which I find a bit distracting for showing the track position of the currently played song, especially with some animation going on in the bar ...

Would not a scrollbar be the typical widget of choice here? On the other hand, the progressbar might have the advantage of printing the current position (min:sec) in a more space preserving manner.

The progress bar type was introduced on popular demand back then.

As for your explanation why the trackbar type is better suited: a trackbar would also imply some kind of "when is it done?" since that's what the control at that location within Exaile’s GUI is for after all. As for animations: that depends on your theme (engine).

Contrary to that are progressbars usually better to distinguish from other controls since it takes 100% of it’s widget space and is usually colored. That outputting text is way more unified was already mentioned by yourself.

From the handling POV there is no real difference between these two types.

Thus I see no real reason to switch back to the track bar.

Track position could be advanced via scroll wheel, eg as in totem movie player where scrolling up fast forwards the film.
