Unable to connect to read messages from an IMAP server

Asked by JCook21

I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and Evolution 2.8.1. I can set up my IMAP account in Evolution and the program can connect to the server to download a list of mailboxes, but no messages at all are shown or downloaded. Do you have any suggestions for this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the question.

What happens when you open a message? Does it download and show it?

The IMAP protocol keeps the messages on the server and does not downlaod them to the client as POP does. Some clients just cache some information for faster access.

I hopr this helps.

The problem is that I can't even see any IMAP message to open them. I'm pretty sure that Evolution is connecting to the server as I can get a list of folders to subscribe to and when I click on send and receive it all works without producing any errors. It's just that none of my messages show up. I know that there are a lot messages on the server and am using Thunderbird at the moment to read them.

Thanks for your reply and help.

The messages you send will not be transfered via the IMAP protocol, but in effect via the smtp protocol. Therefore the correct sending does not conclude that all configuration for the IMAP server or the IMAP client are correct.

I would probably double check all the configuration settings like authentication, and if the connection uses encryption. And also if the right version of IMAP protocol ist used.

What software/version is the IMAP server ?

I hope this helps

Thanks for your help and suggestions-this seems to have been solved since upgrading to Feisty.

Best wishes.
