letter format buttons are shaded in new e-mail (evolution)

I have no possibility to format the text in a new e-mail. The buttons/menu-entries for that are visible, but shaded. How can I activate them?

I think you're creating an e-mail in plain text format.

You can change to HTML format by selecting "Format" -> "HTML" from the top menu of the e-mail editor window.

You can also choose to use HTML format by default by going, from the main Evolution window, into: "Edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Editor preferences" -> "General" (label names might differs, I'm translating from french).
