Can you have multiple identities in evolution?

Asked by kenw

I'm converting over from thunderbird and one of the features there is to have multiple identities.

This is *not* a separate account, but instead is a alternate identity for corresponding with particular people. For example, the local radio station knows my by my IM name, so when I sent them email I set up an identity that corresponded to that. In thunderbird, setting the identity basically allows me to set a different From: and signature and I set my Reply-To: to my normal email.

Under the accounts you can create a new email account with the Server Type: None and give the from and signature to that account as you want. (you can give the same SMTP server as the primary email account, for this new account).

I hope this will solve your problem.

This works - looks odd at first as the account doesn't show up in the list of accounts, but it is present in the drop-down

Yep, This does work, even though it doesn't, on the face of it, seem very logical. Thanks very much. Ray.

Same here: As a programmer I can see the "sexiness" that this basically works as an incidental feature from the existing account management functionality.

But maybe one could make it a little more intuitive and quicker:
 - New button under the "Sending Email" tab of the account options labeled "Add identity..."
 - Clicking that gives you the "New Account" wizard, but with a new account type called "Identity"
 - An "Identity" type account is linked up to an existing account and uses it's SMTP information but has it's own name and sender's address as well it's own default signature.

Without this feature it could be pretty frustrating if you have many identities and your server information changes. (And yes, there are people with lots of identities: VAs, all those outsourced customer support folks etc.)
