Memory allocation failed for PreAllocateMemory

My code crashes with message

   Error! ***Memory allocation failed for PreAllocateMemory: wspace->core. Requested size: -2043361468 bytes

What is the problem?

This error message is thrown by ParMetis which is used in flinley to distribute the FEM mesh. The error message indicates an overflow in the memory allocation caused by a graph which is too big. Using more MPI processors will fix the problem
