Basic help with Data Objects

Hi,

I am wondering where to start with Data objects. How much will I need to know, and where to begin?
I think I need to be able to create a Data object and transform info into a Data object for importing and exporting.
I have looked thru the documentation and tried a lot of different things, but I just need to know where to get started learning what I need to know.
