client desktop disappear after logout

Asked by gengiskunk

Hi,
I've installed the latest epoptes on my lab PCs running xubuntu 16.10 (epoptes-client on student's PCs, epoptes on teacher's one).
When a student logouts, the desktop shown in the teacher's epoptes window disappears.
I can see it again only when the student re-login
I' like to manage the client login from teacher Pc

Anyone can give me some help?

Thank you

There are 2 epoptes processes.
One system process that starts from /etc/network/if-up.d/epoptes-client.
And a session process that starts from /etc/xdg/autostart.

It sounds like Xubuntu 16.10 doesn't launch the if-up.d scripts. Unfortunately non-LTS Ubuntu releases are not a maintenance focus... Maybe you should use 16.04 instead.

thanks for your instant answer.

I've tried with xubuntu 16.04 but the problem still remains.

I've tried to start epoptes-client at boot with rc.local also, but without success.

If you have some more hint, I'll be glad to test it.

Go to a client. Don't login to a graphical session. Switch to vt1 (Alt+Ctrl+F1). Login there. And run:
sudo epoptes-client

Then go to the server. Can you see the client that way?

Hi,
I've made different try changing different distros on the teacher pc.
When it's installed edubuntu 14.04, xubuntu 17.04 and ubuntu 17.04 the teacher can see red pc icon, assist it when the student is on "login screen" and even login with success.

That doesn't work with edubuntu 14.10, xubuntu 16.04, and xubuntu 16.10.
I've tried also to run sudo epoptes-client in tty1, the icon didn't disappear but turned black without any white scripts. (in 14.10, 16.04, 16.10. I didn't try in the the three versions)

I've notice that on 17.04 distros I've tried is installed tigervnc-viewer instead xvncviewer which is on xubuntu 16.10 (i've on verify with this version).

Maybe that can be the problem. What do you think?

I hope I made myself clear

P.s.
Another thing..... but perhaps it needs a new topic..........
in every situation the red icon disappeared at logout when the student pc is connect with wifi, even if the share folder on it was reachable and the ping test was ok.

You said that in Xubuntu 16.04 ther'es no red icon while the student is in the login screen.
Then you said that "the icon didn't disappear but turned black", which means that there was an icon.

Which of those 2 happened?

Again, the test that I'd like to see is:
Boot with Xubuntu 16.04.
Don't login.
Is there a red icon in epoptes?
Then go to vt1 and login there.
Now, is there a red icon in epoptes?

During all that test, you should NOT login to the client normally from the login screen.

You're right.
I did the test when I was login into the client. Sorry.

I'll do the test like you said and I'll let you know.

Can you help with this problem?
