cert downloads OK by client in in showing in GUI

Asked by ajw3208

hi,

I have 2 PC's in a test rig. Both are running EDUBUNTU 12.04. There is no LTSP involved. Just a simple test with 2 standalone PC's. 1 client. 1 server. Boht PC's have been installed from the std EDUBUNTU distro 12.04

I have been able to ascertain that the "client" downloads the cert OK (ran epoptes-client -c as root. Got a "successfully fetched certificate from server:789" result)
using PS axu|grep epoptes returns a PID against the user that is logging into the client that ID's epoptes.

I can ping the server from the client and vica versa. I can telnet to the server from the client using 'telnet server 789' and a connection is opened. I can run epoptes from the command line and the 'client connecting to server:789....done....

From this I am assuming the client is running OK.

Whilst all this goodness is occuring, I am not having the same sucessess on the "server" side.

I open the GUI (all good so far. group membership is working), login into the client. launch the client. Nothing. the "client" is not showing in the GUI. I have tried launching the client manulally and via the std startup application mechansim in Ubuntu which runs on lgin. Neither seems to trigger the client to sho in the server GUI

Why can't I see the client? what do I need to do to ascertain the server is actually running and accepting connections (which from the client side testing it seems it is)

regards,

anthony

Please use the epoptes PPA to update to the most recent epoptes version.
E.g. issues with multiple VGAs have been addressed after the 12.04 release...

Does the problem still happen with epoptes 0.5.7?

I will but whar do multiple VHGA's have to do with this? (assuming VGA is referring to video)?

HI,

I have updated the PPA's and also updated the installed version of epoptes to 0.5.7.

Problem is still occuring

What further iformation do you need?

p.s. Does the client need to be a mamber of the epoptes group. Currently, both the client and server userd ID's are members of the group epoptes on their repective machines.

Hello,

Please try the following steps:
1) Open a terminal in the server and start epoptes from it (by typing epoptes).
2) Boot your client which has the epoptes-client installed. See if there is any output in the epoptes (server) terminal (and paste it here)
3) Open a terminal in the client and start epoptes-client, check again the epoptes (server) terminal for output (and paste it here)

Also, please paste your /var/log/epoptes.log here or in any pastebin.

All this information is needed in order to try and find out the cause of your problem.

Regards,
Fotis

Oh, and regarding your last question, no, the client should NOT be a member of the epoptes group. This is the group for the users of the epoptes GUI only (administrators/teachers).

Although it most probably isn't related to your problem, you should take the client user out of the group epoptes, unless you want him to be able to control other clients by opening the epoptes GUI.

HI all,

I fell into the oldest trap in the book. (and I should have known better)

when the update was done, it overwrites the config files. This has the effect of commenting out server name, listening port etc.

I updated the config files being very very very careful this time.

Success.

BTW. Wow, this is powerful. As an instructor (not a teacher) I can see how IT teachers would ove this.

Handy for home use so you can have the kids in their room doing h/work and monitor them without having to look over their shoulder.

great stuff.

Which files got overwritten? Did it prompt you? At least on Debian, this would
be a serious bug!

the server config file in /etc/eptoptes but I can't actually remember

I did get a prompt asking did I want to overwrite, which I accepted. The actual upgrade seemed to behave as I expected and the prompt was not unexpected.

And prosper
