Cannot broadcast to client that is authenticated via Likewise (AD)

Asked by David Trask

I got localapps running on my single nic Edubuntu (12.04) server...Epoptes works...I can see all the workstations...shut them down...etc.  But the only hitch is when I try to broadcast my own screen to someone who is logged in via LDAP (Likewise) it says it is unable to connect to host: connection refused.  EVERYTHING else works...except boradcasting my screen to theirs.

Also...as you asked...I cannot see the clients prior to login. Once they login, they show up on the admin's screen in Epoptes, but not before.

Ok...I figure out how to get so I can see the clients before login...I installed the client into the chroot. So that part works now. However that did not solve the problem of being able to broadcast my own screen (from another thin-client...logged in as an administrator) to another thin-client logged in as a user authenticated via Likewise. (note: this does not affect users who are logged in via accounts that are on the thin-client server...just those who are on the LDAP server) I get an error dialog box named VNC Viewer: Information.... and it says "unable to connect to host: Connection refused (111)" Hope this helps.

Hi David,

I've no access to any LDAP installations so I can't test, so you'll have to give us some more information to troubleshoot this.

Run `epoptes` from a gnome-terminal on the "teacher" thin client,
then login with LDAP as a student on a thin client,
then from the epoptes menus, open a "root terminal, locally" for that client, and run `epoptes-client` there,
and again from the menus, open a "user terminal" for that client, and again run `epoptes-client`,
then try to broadcast the teacher screen,
and paste all 3 console outputs here.

To copy/paste from the xterm windows, use select + middle mouse click.

Hi. I've the same trouble, but not only with ldap users.
If i start epoptes directly from the server all works fine, but if I start it from a thin client I've some issues sharing screen.
If I start all lab clients and i try to share desktop /Before/ logging in, some clients works, some shows the message reported from David.
if I change from "sharing fullscreen" to "sharing in window" I've the same issue, but not on the same clients. I'm not able to understand if there's a "rule" on which clients work or not, or if it's a random issue.
if i stop desktop sharing, the error message automatically disappears, f i restart it, the number of thin clients that are able to connect to the teacer's one is rapidly decreasing.

teachers that starts epoptes are all ldap users, if it could be relevant.

if i run epoptes-client in "root terminal, locally" or "user terminal" it says
*epoptes-client connecting to server:789...
...done

the error is still there.

any suggestion?

Yes, please open a different question as this question has expired and you have a different issue anyway.
Please also try with a teacher that is not an ldap user.
