problems playing videos after envy install

Asked by Lomax

had ubuntu 7.10 working with x-server and old restricted drivers, had full effects running.

used envy to update drivers, now restricted drivers are unchecked but says in use.

full desktop effects still work but all videos breakup, .mov files even small flash does not work. but flash will work in firefox.

the breakups are video tears and overlay not staying on top so you get flashes of the page under it. this is in ALL players, VLC Mplayer etc.

i tried to rebuild xorg.conf, and it did not fix the video problems. i tried to set the check mark in the restricted drivers and edit composite output from 0 to 1 in xorg.conf

this turned on the desktop effects again but still did not fix the video problem, with composite turned off i get normal video playback but no desktop effects.

i can fix the video problems by removing the driver the envy installed, but then i get no desktop effects?

do i have to remove envy and reinstall restricted drivers and x-server again?

is there a composite overlay issue with ATIs newest drivers?

thanks

i fixed the problem but that was to undo all what envy did. this does not solve the issue envy created.

i uninstalled the ATI driver with envy, i downloaded the restricted ATI driver again it is checked and in use.

i edited the xorg.conf file to turn on composite from 0 to 1.

i downloaded x-server again and removed the old startup script as per there instructions.

i then added fglrx to compiz "white list on line 58"

now i have desktop effects back on and video works correctly again.

no there was a problems with the overlay , this could be a issue with the newest ATI drivers. also envy messed up my config file as it did not have the correct resolution for my dell wide screen LCD. but i am used to having to go in and fix that problem. a clean 7.10 install got it right for the first time, so i do not know why envy still has a issue with it.

i was just hoping i would not have use x-server any more for my ATI X1950 pro card, and that the newest drivers would work correctly.
