Manual directory browsing?

Asked by krank23 on 2008-07-03

OK; I realize you want this to be as simple as possible, right?

But for some people, indexing anything and everything they want to watch/listen to is too much of a chore, not to mention it becomes kind of inflexible - I mean, what? If I insert an USB harddrive, do I need to add it to the surces list and index it before I can browse the media?

Anyways, the current setup is great, but what I'd like is a kind of "manual browsing" tab, in addition to videos etc. A way to manually browse the file system. Wouldnt need any fancy-schmancy stuff, just a simple file browser, and the ability to play or add stuff to playlists from there. It'd be neat, enhance the flexibility of Entertainer greatly - and those who don't want to much around in the file system themselves, well, they don't have to, do they? It's like an opt-in feature... You get my drift?

krank23, we want Entertainer to be as simple and easy to use as possible. Ideally, I think that Entertainer users should be able to set their media folders initially for what they want Entertainer to observe, and then have everything else be done automatically for them.

Manual directory browsing sounds like a pretty cool feature, but we're not trying to be Nautilus (or insert your favorite file browser here). Please don't interpret this as me being dismissive, because I'm really not trying to be at all. As a matter of fact, I think that this would be a great feature for a power user who wants full control of their system.

I specifically like what you've stated about a browser being an opt-in feature. One of our later goals is to create a robust plug-in system for Entertainer so that users can add things that a development community has created for Entertainer. I think that a manual file browser would be a great plug-in. I'll create a wishlist bug for this request.

Can you help with this problem?
