How to rebuild media cache automatically?

It would seem that Entertainer does not automatically rebuild its database of media files. It would seem that running entertainer-server does rebuild the cache, but only under certain conditions (deleting the ~/.cache/entertainer folder seems to help?).

Is there a way to have Entertainer automatically scan for changes when launched? Using the media manager program won't work for me, as I'll be using Entertainer on a home theater PC that is only controlled by a remote.

If this isn't currently supported (or planned), can you point me in the right direction of how I could go about adding support for this, either internally, or via an external script? Or is there a way to disable the database altogether? All I really need is a listing of files in a directory, no metadata needed.

Thanks for the question. Currently there is no option to have Entertainer automatically scan for changes. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the option will ever become available because the available manpower to work on the code has basically dropped to zero (myself included, and I was basically the last contributor). Those of us that have worked on it have moved on to other things in life for now.

Fortunately, there are some other great media center options in the Linux arena. I'd suggest you check out Moovida. I've looked at their developer goals and they had all the same attributes except that they are using a different graphics library.

Other strong options include XBMC, Boxee, or the venerable MythTV. I wish I could say that Entertainer reached the level of quality that those media centers have achieved, but it never managed to break through the glass ceiling.

I'm sorry that I can't give a better report about Entertainer, but I guess that's just reality.
