Dialogue boxes not functioning correctly

When I open a dialogue box to browse and select files/folders (e.g. click Browse... when uploading a photo, or go to select a folder full of music to import), the browser window opens, but it has no option to select a file/folder or cancel, so all I can do is eternally browse and never select. I have to resolve the situation by running xkill and killing the whole process.
Also I cannot type into slingshot... I can paste into it as a workaround so it's not such a problem though.
I'm running Loki, not sure what more I can provide to be helpful?
