How can I fork elementary apps without fear of breaking my system with daily ppa?

I'm very much interested on adding some funcionalities to Files and to explore other projects but sometimes the dependencies aren't met so I need to install the daily ppa in order to compile them. Is there a standar way to work with these code without breaking my already installed apps?
