Web Development and gaming in ElementaryOS?

Asked by fahim rahman

Hey there, i am a typical windows user and have really little knowledge about ubuntu. I am also a web developer (working with php, mysql, html mainly) and i play dota 2 in extra time.

I want to move into Linux platform and i was searching for a suitable and good looking OS, then i found ElementaryOS and i really liked it.

What i want to know is, how good / user friendly / easy it will be to work in this os?
Really sorry for this noobish question but i really need to know :(
I currently use notepad++ and coffee cup for web development projects and i was looking for alternatives and found brackets and aptana. can i install those in elementaryOS?

my basic requirements are web development tool, photoshop, dota 2, chrome / firefox / safari and skype.

anyone can confirm that i can use all those in elementaryOS? and if i can use those then please point me to some guide or give me a search term to look for.

my hardware config is-
amd a10-6700 CPU
4 GB ram
7750 GPU

Thanks in advance guys, really appreciate this project :)

Hello Fahim Rahman,

Great to hear you like elementary OS.
I can confirm that google chrome, firefox, dota 2 and brackets will work on elementary.
I am sad to say that adobe photoshop doesn't work on any linux.
I have heard it is possible with wine (wine lets u run windows applications on linux) also notepad++ is possible with wine.
There are some more web development tools for linux: bluefish, sublime-text 2 of 3. ( not focused on web but still a good text editor).

for photoshop u could use gimp, inkscape, darktable, or adobe photoshop in wine.

Sins u have a AMD graphic card it will be less hard then nvidia to get dota 2 to run on a playable fps ( around 30 or higher).

U could always try some things out with a cd or usb without installing elementary OS on your hard drive.
then u could try some applications and the workflow.

Kind regards,
Kay
