EOS won't do reds

Asked by etim

Since installing Luna, my monitor (Dell S2209W) won't display red colors.
Reds won't show up anywhere, not in photos, my browser or VLC. I even screwed with the color settings in VLC but no reds came up.

My PC is an old Gateway GT5464 with an Intel Pentium E2140 processor and Intel GMA 950 graphics accelerator.

(I'm very new to EOS and linux, and installed EOS 2-3 days ago and still feeling pretty lost and stupid).
Since install, I've updated EOS and checked for driver updates (there weren't any new ones).
I managed to dl/install the driver for the monitor which then showed up as an entry ("DellS2209W Color Profile, D6500") in the color profile window.
The calibrate button was greyed out--am I to understand that I need some separate hardware to do a proper calibration?
*If so, is there any workaround so that I don't need to buy the extra calibration hardware? (I don't need my colors to be perfect, but right now red just shows up as black).
*Being uncalibrated wouldn't cause reds not to show up at all, would it?

(In case you're wondering, I did try messing with the monitor's settings w/out any improvement. I also tried some other linux live discs w/out improvement).
I tried to find a driver for the GMA950 for linux but all Intel offered was for the Ubuntu 13 series which wouldn't install due to "missing dependencies".
*Is there a driver out there for EOS/Ubuntu 12.04 that I can try for my GMA950?

Any other ideas/suggestions?
