eOS running slow!

Asked by A. Monteiro

I've heard about this Linux distro recently, and I liked how well it looked(GUI), as there are a lot of distros out there that look a bit old/clunky. Anyways, straight to the point:

I've been experiencing graphical issues prior to and after installing Elementary OS.

Prior to installing(on Live CD):

After booting, it would load the wallpaper(rocks at the beach) with a black window, nothing more. I've searched for a fix, and it had to do with nomodeset. I had to press F6 when the system was loading so I could access the settings. And it worked! So I did install the OS(I allowed 3rd party updates).

After installing:

I was excited to try the distro, but then I found another issue. Now it seems I am stuck on the login screen, but it is rendering smaller images of the desktop wallpaper.

This is the issue:

Those seem to be the login windows, fortunately I managed to click on the one at the left and type my password. Then, I found out eOS was running really slow. Mouse cursor seems to be fine, but there is a long delay when I click on a button for example.

I don't know what to do to be honest, that is why I am asking this question, it is my last resort.
Here are the specs of my GPU and CPU(if it helps):

NVIDIA(Gigabyte) GeForce FX 5200
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40 GHz

If you need to know anything more, just post/ask. I am a beginner in Linux though(Windows user for 7+ years).

Thanks.

Installing the proprietary Nvidia driver should fix this. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia for instructions.

If the GUI is unusable, drop to the console by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+F1", log in and follow the console instructions on that page.

Do not use "nomodeset" after installing the proprietary driver.

Never did I ever manage to get the FX-5200 graphics drivers to work for either elementary OS or Ubuntu. The card support was dropped after Nvidia driver 173, and the 173 drivers won't work for any X server after the one in about Ubuntu 11.04 (can't remember off-hand). Elementary OS seems to need 3d acceleration for window borders, etc.

What I'd do if I were you is install Lubuntu, it doesn't need 3d acceleration. Just don't expext any fancy effects. One thing I noticed with Lubuntu was I could browse the internet (and watch youtube) much better than in windows even with working drivers.

Can you help with this problem?
