Updating causes boot to fail.

Asked by Danny Trite

Hello,
I updated my Luna install two days ago and didn't turn it off (just closed the lid) then took it to my girlfriends house.

When I got to her house I tried to open Slingshot but it refused to open and just displays the outline of where Slingshot should be. So, I thought I would reset and see if that fixes the problem, but, I could only get as far as the "Ubuntu 0.2" screen, each time getting stuck on something different (checking battery state, disconnection from Plymouth).

I could load up the command line and login but didn't know how to start Pantheon ): so I went to Google and found a few commands such as startx (which I believe is for Gnome anyway).

I than gave up decided to just re-install the latest daily build. All went fine until I ran Update Manager, as soon as I rebooted my laptop I was back to square one, stuck at the "Ubuntu 0.2" screen.

I wanted to list the packages installed but typing out the 132 updates would take longer than I would like, so if anyone knows of a way to export the updates so that I can post them here (Google didn't seem to turn up anything).

- Danny.

Hey Danny,

There is an issue with the latest Linux Kernel and ULatencyd. You can either remove ULatencyd or use an older kernel version while we wait for a fix from upstream.

I forgot to add that I tried both the older Kernel and removing ULatencyd, but didn't work.

Thought I would add some more information.

1) Installed using elementaryos-unstable-i386.20120729.iso
2) Removed ULatencyd.
3) Updated via Update Manager.
4) Checked that ULatencyd has been removed.
5) Rebooted and it would no longer load the GUI

I've been using daily builds for a few months now with no issue.

I have the same issue running it in a VM. I took the same steps as Danny and am in the same situation. I have another installation on a laptop using elementaryos-unstable-i386.20120729.iso, but I am not updating it until I know the issue has been resolved.

elementaryos-unstable-i386.20120817.iso also fails to boot to GUI.
ULatencyd isn't present.

I think it may have something to do with the latest 3.2.0-29.

I did an update yesterday as well but left out anything -29 related. It installed anyway -29 is usable but the kernel before is working fine.
