Pantheon heavily downlplays the role of minimize on the desktop. Instead of minimizing, apps should be closed and resume right where they left off. You can always use the multiple workspaces to organize your open windows.

Well, I'd love to see desktop applications to be able to instantly close/resume.
Like mobile apps.

Is that a part of the elementary app requirements ?
Is there an API to implement for that matters ?
Because, I know that the lifecycle of a mobile app is tad more complex than a desktop one...

As I commend the vision, I know that it will take a looooooonnnnnnnng time for desktop applications to implement such a behavior.
Especially big complex applications like content creation ones.

Banning minimizing makes document to document comparison/reviewing a real pain.
And on a very large screen, it makes no sense to have only one application visible at a time.
This is something that Windows 8 will gonna learn the hard way :)

It may be a good idea to let the user override this easily till the fast close/resume behavior gains more traction.

I'm all for a minimalist approach, but not at the cost of crippling the user experience.

Keep up the good work,
Carl.

We do have plans for more intelligent memory management, and it's not as hard as most think, see http://shnatsel.blogspot.com/2012/04/5-ideas-that-every-desktop-os-should.html

In fact I'm kind of surprised nobody implemented that before...

Back to topic: I guess Gala honors Mutter's keybinding for "show desktop". I can't find it in dconf on my system, though...

You can click on an App's icon in the dock to minimize the window.

My solution: Install "gnome-tweak-tool" and set the middle-click to minimize windows. http://bit.ly/SJVodu
