How to add a shortcut to the desktop ?

How to conveniently add a shortcut to a file or application to the desktop ?

I tried by dragging and dropping files from Files or applications from Slingshot but to no avail.

There's no "desktop" in Pantheon. You can drag apps to the dock for quick access.

Is this "by design" or is it a feature that is left to implement or still under consideration ?

Because, I wouldn't want to put shortcuts to documents in the dock, nor having folders there.
It would feel weird.
And will crowd the dock very quickly.

It's by design. Use your "documents" folder for documents for now. We're working on better ways to organize content.
