Installing Pantheon Shell in Ubuntu 11.10

Asked by Brock Smith

Is there anyway to easily install Pantheon Shell inside ubuntu 11.10 alongside Gnome Shell 3 and Unity.
I can never get any of the downloads here to work (.deb, .bz2, etc) The terminal (or GDEBI) always tells me a component is missing so the installation fails. I really want to try Pantheon Shell and it's many apps. Especially Beatbox, slingshot, and Wingpanel. Installing the whole session would give me all of these apps in one go.

Add https://launchpad.net/~elementary-os/+archive/daily PPA and the PPAs from its description, then install pantheon-shell package and anything else you wish.

Is the Pantheon Shell package called libpantheon . I don't see an exact entry that reads Pantheon Shell

The package is called "pantheon-shell". Quit reading stuff, just add the PPAs and run "sudo apt-get install pantheon-shell" ;)
Remember, adding the daily PPA is not enough, you'll have to add the PPAs listed in its description, too.

It won't work on my Ubuntu 11.10, it either sais no pubkey with the stable ppa and 404 not found with the unstable ppa. Any ideas?

At this time, you can only sort of expect a working install in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise. I suggest you use some form of virtual machine software to test in since Precise is still in alpha state (as is elementary).

Once you get Precise installed:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-os/daily

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install pantheon-shell pantheon

You may also have to install pantheon-shell, I haven't checked in a while.
