Is eCryptfs supported under Lucid 10.04 ?

Asked by Robert Mileski

I've installed the Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 release candidate couple of days ago, and noticed, there is no Menu to choose whether you want encrypted home directory.

What's the thing with this ? Is Canonical backing out of support for the whole eCryptfs project ?

It's definitely there.

What flavor of Ubuntu 10.04 did you try to install?

I installed the Lucid Release Candidate 10.04, and there was no question at the end of the installation questions, whether I want to encrypt my home folder. I will try later today with the new ISO with the final release, and report back.

You're asked during step 5 of the setup wizard with 10.04, and in fact with 9.10 (I think). It can even be applied in 9.04 with a kernel switch when booting the CD.

WIth 10.04, it's a radio option at the bottom of Step 5 that you have to enable. After installation, and after logging in for the first time, you will then be prompted to run the command to show you your mount passphrase.

If you don't configure it during setup, you can still do so afterwards for new users.

sudo adduser --encrypt JoeBloggs

Or you can just setup a private directory in your account :

ecryptfs-setup-private
