Does Ecryptfs set a default passphrase ?

Asked by Florian Torche

Hello !

I have a problem with gnome-power-manager that keeps me from login into my Ubuntu 9.10 session. So, I decided to install another Ubuntu on another partition to try to recover my "home" files.

I know I didn't set a passphrase at any time, so how did ecryptfs crypt my files ? Is there a default passphrase ?

Thank you very much for trying to help me.

I found my wrapped-passphrase file but when I'm using "ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase [file] [wrapping passphrase]" it's asking for a "wrapping passphrase" that I haven't.

What is that (un)wrapping passphrase ?

It's your login password.

I tried this :

I copied my "wrapped-passphrase" to the / folder.

Then i did this :

florian@spitfire:/$ ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase [wrapped-passphrase][<my ubuntu login password>]
Passphrase: <my ubuntu login password>
Error: Unwrapping passphrase failed [-5]
Info: Check the system log for more information from libecryptfs

I guess i'm doing it wrong because i entered my ubuntu login password twice.

You shouldn't have had to copy the wrapped-passphrase file anywhere. It is located in the hidden dir /home/user/.ecryptfs and you are best unwrapping it from there due to permission issues. If your earlier attempt failed, try this instead from your home directory :

florian@spitfire:~$ ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase .ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase YourLoginPassword

When you press enter you should just see your eCryptfs passphrase, something like this :

a15a2fbc7a7XXXXXXXXX2883eea3

Can you help with this problem?
